NEW VINEYARD – Police have released the identify of a man killed when lumber fell from a pickup truck onto his car as investigators continue looking for the truck driver who failed to stop after the accident.

Police say Steven McKinney, 55, a longtime employee at Sugarloaf USA ski resort, died of blunt force trauma when lumber fell from a poorly secured load onto his car Wednesday evening as he drove on Route 27 in New Vineyard.

The falling timber also demolished another vehicle, but that driver and her 10-year-old daughter narrowly escaped injury.

Franklin County sheriff’s Cpl. Steve Charles said the truck was hauling a load of 12- to 16-foot-long beams when a dozen pieces slid out the back.

The driver kept going, but Charles said his office has received several solid leads that are being investigated.
