A female student at the University of Maine reported that she was sexually assaulted around 3 a.m. Friday. The woman lives on campus in a residence hall, but police don’t want to release the name of the dormitory because the investigation is ongoing.

“The victim identified the person she alleges to be the assailant as someone she knows,” UM spokesman Joe Carr said Friday. “The police are certain this matter doesn’t represent a danger to the public.”

A 19-year-old University of Maine student was playing with a pocketknife when he stabbed a fellow male student in the leg, requiring the victim to get stitches, UM spokesman Joe Carr said Friday.

University police were dispatched to York Hall at 5:15 a.m. Friday. They arrested Nicholas Brotschi and charged him with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, a felony.

He was taken to Penobscot County Jail and later released on bail, according to a jail official. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)

The State Police Dive Team assisted Old Town police this week in investigating four burglaries in Old Town and Veazie. Divers were looking for evidence in the Penobscot River that is possibly related to the cases in which police have received new information, Old Town police Detective Tom Adams said Friday.

“Right now, the river’s a little too rapid,” Adams said. “We’re going to probably have to come back to it.”

The water temperature was 35 degrees while the air temperature was about 20 degrees, according to state police officials. (Aimee Dolloff, BDN)

University of Maine Public Safety Officer Todd Pooler summoned a University of Maine student for operating under the influence early Friday morning.

Pooler noticed that a Jeep Cherokee was being driven at a reckless speed and fishtailing in the Aroostook Hall parking lot. Once the driver parked the vehicle, Pooler approached him and smelled alcohol.
