ROCKLAND – Stephanie Whitten tallied 13 points as undefeated Waterville raced out to a 21-8 first quarter lead en route to a 69-45 girls basketball victory over Rockland Friday.

Morgan Frame posted 11 points while Paige Gardner and Jen Nale each added 10 points for the Panthers.

Dana Clark scored 10 points to lead Rockland.

At Hampden, the defending Class A state champion Rams rolled out to a 29-8 halftime lead and got a game-high 17 points from Rachael Mack as Cony of Augusta ran its record to 11-2 with the win.

Shelby Pelkey added 12 points, 11 assists and four steals, while Courtney Dufour hit all four of her 3-point attempts for 12 points. Mack, a 6-foot-1 senior, pulled down eight rebounds and had three assists.

Hampden (1-11) had 14 turnovers in the first half, with six on their first seven possessions of the game. The Rams scored 10 unanswered points during a first-quarter run and outscored the Broncos 12-2 in the second quarter.

Cony went 8-for-14 from 3-point range.

Freshman Julia Snyder led Hampden with 12 points, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter.

At Lubec, Shelby Searles sank two free throws with three seconds left to expand the lead to three and secure the win.

Lubec avenged an earlier 61-60 loss at Machias.

Amanda Huntley led four Hornets in double figures with 14 points. Krista Wright and Samantha Denbow had 13 apiece, and Searles finished with 12.

Fayranne Lipton’s 16 points paced Machias. She had eight in the fourth quarter to help her team cut a 14-point deficit to one. Tiara Lipton had 14 points and Danielle Wormell 13.

At Presque Isle, Brian Allyn scored two goals, including one in a three-goal second period as Greely of Cumberland Center rallied past Presque Isle.

Tucker Geoffroy and Jesse Shavel each added goals in the second period for Greely. Andy Beckmann, Scott Fournier, Kyle Selig, Shavel and Allyn each grabbed an assist. Matt Labbe made 17 saves on 19 shots for the 5-4 Rangers.

Brennen Shaw and Zac Campbell each scored a goal in the first period for Presque Isle. Jason Martin, Steve Ford and Shaw had an assist apiece. Ethan Hill stopped 26 of 30 shots for the 5-6-1 Wildcats.

Hermon 66, Ellsworth 55

At Hermon, senior forward Rogan Rowe had 18 points and 11 rebounds as the Hawks won for the fifth time in their last seven games.

Derek Helms scored 15 points for 6-6 Hermon, while Colton Gross added 10 points and Andy Ball had eight points and seven rebounds.

Junior guard Kevin Tarr (eight points, six assists, five steals and five rebounds) got Hermon off to a quick start with a basket, two assists and two steals in the first 2:30 of play to give the Hawks a 10-2 lead.

Ellsworth (2-9) battled back and took its only lead of the night at 16-15 on a follow-up basket by Sam Coombs early in the second quarter.

But Hermon went on an 11-0 run – with Devin Dority scoring seven points – to take a 32-20 lead en route to a 34-22 halftime advantage.

The Hawks’ lead was 55-44 midway through the fourth quarter before Ellsworth scored six straight points, including a three-point play by Brad Folmer, to cut the gap to 55-50 with 3:09 left.

But Helms answered with a jumper and Tarr fed Gross for a fast-break layup to give Hermon a nine-point cushion.

James Doe led Ellsworth with 21 points and nine rebounds.

At Lubec, Ty Richards led four Machias scorers in double figures with 20 points as the Bulldogs defeated Lubec.

Michael Little scored 18 points and Noah Prescott had 16 while Michale Jenkins chipped in with 10 for Machias.

Timmy Gross led Lubec with a game-high 35 points, including six 3-pointers. Shayne McPherson added 12 points for the Hornets.
