AUGUSTA – The once No. 2 person in Maine state government is on a waiting list for a kidney transplant.

Former Senate President Beverly Daggett of Augusta received a donated kidney from her mother in 1996. But transplanted kidneys last only about a decade, so Daggett needs a new one. For now, she receives dialysis treatments to filter impurities from her blood.

The average wait for a kidney transplant is four years.

Daggett, 62, served 20 years in the Maine House and Senate. She finished up as Senate president in 2004.
