BAR HARBOR – A group that is looking to build a new public playground in the village of Town Hill has received a grant from the Maine Community Foundation.

With the $4,500 grant, the West Eden Village Improvement Society has raised more than $40,000 for the playground, which would be located on Route 102 in Town Hill between Union Trust bank and the local community hall. The town leases the site and will maintain the playground if it is built, the society indicated in a written statement.

The group estimates it needs $100,000 to make the playground a reality.

The grant “is a wonderful vote of confidence in our goal of creating a safe, public playground for the children” of Mount Desert Island, Joy Kelly, head of the society’s playground committee, said in the statement. “There is a great need for this facility in our community and we appreciate that [MCF] shares our passion for making it happen.”
