BANGOR – The Bangor School Children’s Fund was established more than 60 years ago by the Junior League and the Lions Club to pay for milk served at schools. When the need to cover the cost of milk was met, the fund expanded to include schoolchildren’s needs related to health, such as eye glasses, hearing aids and other needs identified by the school nurse.

Area clubs and parent-teacher organizations support the fund. Each year, the Downeast School PTO donates $500. The Lions Club also gives $500.

Other groups that have aided the fund are Quipus, Current Events Club and the Knights of Columbus.

For many years, Rosemary Riley of Bangor was treasurer of the fund. Those involved with the School Children’s Fund acknowledged her dedication to keeping the fund viable.

For information about the fund or to make a donation, call Nancy McNally at 992-4552 or e-mail nancy.mcnally@bangormaine.gov.
