Warren, Frost power Bangor past Bulldogs

BANGOR – It was a night of firsts for a pair of Bangor High School hockey players and the result was a dramatic win.

Speedy junior left wing Johnny Warren registered his first career hat trick (three goals) and sophomore center Noah Frost scored his first varsity goal as the Rams erased a 2-0 deficit with four third-period goals to beat Lawrence of Fairfield 4-2 at Sawyer Arena Thursday night.

Bangor improved to 6-6 while the Bulldogs fell to 5-6-1.

Senior right wing James Banks’ first-period goal and senior center Andrew Englehart’s second-period goal supplied Lawrence with its lead.

But Warren cut the lead in half just 41 seconds into the third period and, after Frost tied it on the power play with 4:59 remaining, Warren notched the game-winner just 1:16 later. He clinched the win with a shorthanded empty-net goal with 45 seconds remaining.

“After the second period, we said we had to relax and play Bangor hockey,” said Warren. “We had been trying to do too much [individually] in the first two periods. We were sloppy and we had to clean it up.”

Bangor coach Tim Taylor said after a penalty-marred second period, it was important for his team to regain its composure.

“I thought we could outlast them if we played disciplined hockey,” said Taylor whose Rams outshot Lawrence 11-4 in the third period.

Warren triggered the rally off a Joey Seccareccia pass.

“Joey was behind the net and I was screaming for it. He passed it out to me and I shot it far corner,” said Warren who beat Lawrence goalie Chris Caron over his glove.

Caron said Warren got the shot off quickly and “he caught me off-guard.”

That goal gave the Rams momentum and put the Bulldogs back on their heels.

“We strayed away [from our game plan] and penalties killed us,” said Lawrence senior center and captain Jack Hersom.

Frost tied it on just his second shift of the game. He had moved up from the fourth to the second line to replace Christian Dionne, who had received a five-minute major for butt-ending and a game disqualification in the second period.

Butt-ending is forcefully jabbing an opponent with the top of your stick.

Chad Kelley carried the puck down the right wing and curled back before sliding it across to Frost driving down the slot.

Frost said he tried to one-time it and his shot “went through the five-hole.

“My first goal came at the right time,” said Frost.

“It took a bad bounce off the inside of my pad,” said Caron.

Phil Frost set up Warren’s game-winner as he tracked down a loose puck behind the Lawrence net and put a pass right on Warren’s stick.

“I put it low, blocker side,” said Warren, whose quick wrister beat Caron to the short side.

Lawrence went on the power play with 2:43 remaining and goalie Andrew Riley made a couple of good saves before Seccareccia made an important diving block to deflect the puck out of the Ram zone.

Seconds later, Warren fired a 90-footer into the empty net.

Banks gave the Bulldogs a richly deserved first-period lead by finishing off a perfectly-executed two-on-one with Balanger. He tapped in Belanger’s return pass.

Lawrence outworked Bangor in the first period, outshooting the Rams 11-5.

Englehart extended the lead off another two-on-one in the second period. Belanger beat a Ram defenseman but the puck rolled across to Englehart, who swept it between Riley’s pads.

Riley finished with 17 saves, including 10 in the first period. Caron made 20 stops, 15 over the last two periods.
