Reservations for state parks begin on Feb. 1

The Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands will begin accepting reservations at 12 state park campgrounds on Feb. 1 at 9 a.m.

Campers may make reservations online at www.CampWithMe.com, call 800-332-1501 (in-state) or 207-624-9950 (out-of-state) or mail reservations to Bureau of Parks and Lands, Attn: Reservations, 22 SHS, Augusta, 04333.

Traditionally, the opening day of reservations is the busiest. In 2007, the reservations center processed 1,812 reservations in the first 24 hours.

Reservations can be made at the following state parks: Sebago Lake, Aroostook, Bradbury Mountain, Camden Hills, Cobscook Bay, Lake St. George, Lamoine, Lily Bay, Mount Blue, Peaks-Kenny, Rangeley Lake and Warren Island.

Reservations must be made at least two days prior to the first night’s stay. Camping fees are payable at the time the reservations are made. Internet and telephone reservations must be made with MasterCard, Visa, Discover or debit cards. Checks and money orders are accepted from mail-in or walk-in customers.

Veterans sports days planned

Maine Handicapped Skiing will hold its third annual Winter Veterans/No Boundaries program at Sunday River in Newry from Jan. 31 to Feb. 4.

The Veterans/No Boundaries program provides recreational activities to veterans and active-duty personnel with a disability that may require adaptive equipment and techniques in order to participate in sports.

The event will include opportunities to take part in alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, snowboarding, dogsledding and snowshoeing.

Pushaw derby planned

The Pushaw Lake Snowmobile Club will hold its 28th annual ice fishing derby on Feb. 2-3.

Tickets are $3 apiece, and an ice shack is among the raffle items that will be given away.

A derby breakfast will be served from 5-11 a.m. both days. Meals will cost $5.

Narraguagus walk on tap

The Narraguagus River Watershed Council and the Maine Sea Coast Mission Ed Greaves Education Centers will host a spectacular walk along recently restored foot trails on Feb. 8.

The walk begins at 3 p.m. Walkers meet up at the mission chapel and nursery school on Bethel Lane in Cherryfield, and the walk will take place along the Narraguagus River. Participants are urged to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Cross country skis or snowshoes are welcome if the snow cover is adequate.

After the walk, a bonfire will be lit.
