I really enjoyed our week of global warming this month. We used to call it the January thaw.
December in Maine was just the tip of the iceberg (pun intended). It has been cold and snowy to the extent that many records have been eclipsed or nearly equaled going way back in history. Yet, the political community and some of the scientific community has gone berserk trying to scare the public about global warming, telling us that “the planet has a fever.” One can only speculate what their real agenda is.
The earth’s climate has been changing for millions of years with no impact by SUVs and the rest of man’s global misdeeds as a factor. The climate will keep changing at its own pace regardless of how many people buy a Toyota Prius, or use toxic neon light bulbs.
About 15,000 years ago Bangor was covered by ice a mile high – a glacier of immense proportions. Obviously we have had warming since then or we would still be covered with that ice. But the cycle that caused that glacier to melt had nothing to do with man. It was a natural occurrence without our interference.
About 3,000 years ago, the waters of the coast of Maine were warm enough to support the growth of oysters which now inhabit the waters in Chesapeake Bay. The conclusion that can be drawn from that is there has been a cooling trend for the last 3,000 years. Again, not caused by human influence. (Not many people on the planet then.)
Some scientists predict that we are going to continue in this cooling cycle for at least 50 more years. I hope that the global warming camp wins the argument. I like the idea of warmer winters, not colder. Probably buying less heating oil at $3 plus a gallon would be a great idea.
