$2M grant to assist displaced base workers

PORTLAND – The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded $2 million in emergency grants to help workers who will lose their jobs when the Brunswick Naval Air Station shuts down.

U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine announced the emergency funding on Thursday.

The money will provide access to employment and job training services in five Maine counties – Androscoggin, Cumberland, Lincoln, Sagadahoc and York – directly affected by the air base’s closure.

The air station is due to close by 2011 after being targeted in 2005 by the Base Closure and Realignment Commission.
