At East Machias, Taylor Seeley came off the bench to score 14 points and senior captain Kayla Wood added 12 as the Washington Academy girls basketball team upset George Stevens 48-35 at Gardner Gymnasium, knocking the Eagles of Blue Hill from the ranks of the undefeated.

The Raiders, now 12-2, earned some vengeance after GSA, now 14-1, won a Jan. 4 matchup 64-60 in overtime.

WA didn’t need any extra time Thursday, using a 9-0 run in the second quarter to take the lead for good. Wood hit a layup and drew a foul, converting a free throw for a 20-18 lead. She scored on an offensive rebound, followed by an Andi Flannery jumper and then a basket by Carilla Fritz off a Wood assist.

That run gave the Raiders a 26-18 lead. Washington Academy extended its advantage to 39-24 late in the third quarter and was able to keep at least a 10-point lead the rest of the way.

The Raiders forced 19 first-half turnovers in their man-to-man defense. Wood, who guarded GSA’s Maddie Park, held her to five points after Park poured in 27 in the Jan. 4 game.

Flannery finished with just five points and racked up 16 rebounds. Seeley and Wood each had six boards and Bri Nicely had five.

India Frazier led the Eagles with 10 points and nine rebounds. Regular starter Marina Van der Eb played limited minutes because of a foot injury she suffered earlier this week. Kayla Eaton, who started in her place, scored six points and pulled down eight rebounds.
