Slick roads keep police, wreckers busy throughout region

State, Penobscot County and local police agencies were busy Tuesday with dozens of accidents related to slick road conditions, none of which resulted in life-threatening injury.

Most of the accidents occurred during the morning commute and the early evening hours, when temperatures were around or below the freezing point, a state police dispatcher with the Orono barracks said Tuesday night.

Dispatchers with the Penobscot Regional Communications Center reported a similarly busy day as vehicles slid off the road, rolled or tipped over, though most of those calls came in the morning.

In Bangor, there were at least a dozen weather-related accidents throughout the day, most of them happening during the morning and late afternoon commutes, Sgt. Larry Weber of the Bangor Police Department said. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)

While running a routine traffic control stop on Hammond Street on Monday night, Bangor police Officers Steve Jordan and Jim Dearing came across a man with a large knife concealed in his jacket and arrested him, Sgt. Bob Bishop said Tuesday.

Garland Webb, 23, of Bangor was stopped at around 10:20 p.m. by police for driving without a license, and the officers found the knife in a sheath under his clothing. Police later learned that he also was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

Besides being arrested on the warrant, Webb was charged with operating after suspension and carrying a concealed weapon. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail and was later released on his own recognizance. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
