Big School (Classes A-B)
JOHN GORDON
Gordon, a senior on the Ellsworth wrestling team, was named most outstanding wrestler of the Penobscot Valley Conference championship meet. Gordon earned his second conference title in three years by defeating Dexter’s Brian O’Connor in the 125-pound final.
Small School (Classes C-D)
NICK SAUNDERS
Saunders, a junior center on the George Stevens Academy basketball team, had two big games as the Eagles of Blue Hill continued their late-season surge. Saunders had 20 points and nine rebounds in a one-point win over Washington Academy of East Machias, then had 17 points and 10 rebounds in a victory over Bucksport.
GIRLS
Big School (Classes A-B)
HILARY MAXIM
An Old Town senior, Maxim clocked a season-best time of 2 minutes, 23.30 seconds in the 800-meter run Saturday to take over the top Class B spot in the state. Maxim, who has the top mile and 2-mile times in the state regardless of class, is undefeated in individual competition in the Eastern Maine Indoor Track League so far this season.
Small School (Classes C-D)
RACHEL FOSTER
Foster, a senior center for the 17-1 Houlton girls basketball team, recorded a triple-double Saturday in a 60-35 win over Stearns of Millinocket. She scored 19 points, had 10 blocks, and pulled down 14 rebounds, including the 1,000th rebound of her career. Foster also scored 15 points in a 43-31 win over Class B Caribou on Tuesday and had 19 points and 12 rebounds in a 51-39 victory over Fort Kent Jan. 29.
