Maine killer loses request for new trial

AUGUSTA – A Maine man who entombed his wife in fiberglass after beating her to death has lost his appeal for a new trial.

Justice Thomas Warren rejected the request by Stephen Lockhart for either a reversal of his conviction or a new trial.

Lockhart was convicted in Kennebec County Superior Court in 2001 of killing Andrea Lockhart by hitting her with a piece of lumber in a Southwest Harbor boatyard where he worked. He put her body in a box, filled it with spray foam and covered it with fiberglass.

Among other things, Lockhart contended his lawyer was ineffective because he failed to get a psychological evaluation. He’s serving a 47-year sentence.
