MMA men earn split; Bradford sparks Husson win

CASTINE – Maine Maritime Academy earned a North Atlantic Conference men’s basketball split over the weekend as the Mariners beat Johnson State College 81-65 Saturday after losing to Castleton State 77-69 on Friday.

On Saturday, Chad Paddock paced 9-11 Maine Maritime with 24 points. Haskell had 18 points and 13 boards and DiFrederico scored 13 points.

Charlie Viana scored 21 points to lead Johnson State.

On Friday, Kevin Cayea scored 22 points to lead 13-7 Castleton.

Adam Haskell had 18 points and eight rebounds for the Mariners and Derek DiFrederico added 13 points and seven assists. Neil Stewart had 10 points and 10 boards and Jake Manner had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Husson 86, Castleton State 83

At Bangor, Brock Bradford had 24 points and eight assists to lift Husson College over Castleton State College Saturday.

Sheraud Lee posted 16 points and four assists for the Eagles while Matt MacKenzie and Nick Perras each had 12 points.

Josh Howe led Castleton State (Vt.) with 24 points and Chris Young chipped in 19 points and 13 rebounds.

St. John passes 1,000-point mark

At Cambridge, Mass., Friday, senior Matt St. John drained nine 3-pointers and scored 29 points to surpass the 1,000-point plateau for his career as UMaine-Farmington defeated Lesley University.

Ted Neil scored 14 points for the Beavers and Sean Fry added 11 points.

Joseph Chatman led Lesley with 22 points and four assists.

UM-Fort Kent wins two

At Fort Kent, Gediminas Sumyla combined for 44 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds in two games as the University of Maine-Fort Kent defeated Vermont Technical College 81-68 Saturday and the College of Saint Joseph 81-73 Sunday.

In Saturday’s game, Sumyla had 25 points and eight assists for UM-Fort Kent and Jimmy Lopez scored 17 points. Hamill Bassue had 16 points and Othniel Hyliger added 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Jake Clough led Vermont Tech with 19 points.

In Sunday’s game, Sumyla led the Bengals with 19 points and Hyliger added 18 points and 14 rebounds. Lopez scored 17 points and Bassue chipped in 15 points and four steals.

Rui Carmo had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the College of Saint Joseph (Vt.).

UMFK wins two

At Fort Kent, Shir Fuchs tallied a game-high 22 points Saturday to power the University of Maine-Fort Kent by Vermont Technical College 75-39.

The Lady Bengals defeated the College of Saint Joseph (Vt.) 68-58 on Sunday.

In Saturday’s game, Arcilla Jeffers scored 15 points while Alisa Licata had 13 and Leah Ribera added 10 for UMFK.

Vermont Tech was led by Eliza Wakefield and Stacy Corey with 10 points apiece.

In Sunday’s game, Ashley Ames led the Lady Bengals with 22 points. Fuchs netted 16 points while Jeffers had 11 and Ribera 10.

Victoria Guetti paced the College of Saint Joseph with 15 points.
