BUCKSPORT – The Maine Warden Service on Sunday investigated a snowmobile accident that claimed the life of a 44-year-old Bucksport man.
The accident happened Friday night on Silver Lake in Bucksport, the warden service said in a prepared statement
Carl Coleman of 22 Coleman Lane in Bucksport was pronounced dead at the scene. His brother Nathaniel Coleman, age unknown, who was on a separate snowmobile was not injured.
Around 10:30 p.m., the Coleman brothers were traveling across Silver Lake at an apparent high rate of speed when Carl Coleman’s snowmobile went up onto the shore and struck a tree, Sgt. Patrick Devlin of the Maine Warden Service said in the statement.
“[Carl Coleman] was overdriving his headlights,” Devlin said. “The shore came up too fast and he hit a maple tree.”
The accident occurred about a quarter-mile from the boat ramp.
Coleman’s death is the fourth snowmobile-related fatality this year, and the third fatality in eight days, the warden service said.
On Feb. 1, a 17-year-old Atkinson boy was reported missing while en route to a friend’s house to spend the night. Low visibility from a winter storm caused the boy to become lost and he fell through thin ice on Sebec Lake and drowned. He was found Saturday morning
On Feb. 5, a Kennebunk man died when he missed a turn on a trail in Dayton. He hit a ditch and was thrown into a field.
On Jan. 4, a 23-year-old Kennebunk man died after hitting a gatepost on a shared trail in Sanford while out riding with childhood friends.
