Chimney fire sends family to Red Cross

VEAZIE – Little if any structural damage resulted from a chimney fire Monday morning, but the Red Cross was called in to assist the family that rented the home, according to Veazie fire officials.

When fire crews arrived shortly after 7:30 a.m. at 24 Oak Grove St., the occupants said there were flames around the chimney pipe. The renters had used a dry chemical fire extinguisher to try to put the flames out. Although the fire was contained to the chimney, the chemicals made a mess in the house.

With a small child living at the home, Veazie fire officials called the American Red Cross to help the family find a place to stay until they could contact their insurance company and have the place professionally cleaned.

Fire officials said they believe the home is insured by the owner. The tenants had renter’s insurance.

The Orono Fire Department also responded to the call, and crews had cleared the scene by about 9 a.m.
