OSTERSUND, Sweden – Russell Currier and the U.S. finished 16th out of 19 biathlon teams in the mixed relay Tuesday at the senior world championships.

Currier, a Stockholm native who graduated from Caribou High School in 2006 and is a five-time member of the U.S. youth/junior world championships team, anchored the relay, which finished 10 minutes, 5.3 second behind winner Germany. He had one penalty and needed a total of six extra rounds.

The U.S. team, which is also made up of Laura Spector of Lenox, Mass., Tracy Barnes of Durango, Colo., and Jeremy Teela of Anchorage, Alaska, had a total of two penalties with 14 extra rounds.

In the mixed relay, each team has two women and two men ski two loops – 6 kilometers for the women and 7.5 for the men – with a prone and a standing shooting stage for each team member.

Currier and Spector currently ski for the Caribou-based Maine Winter Sports Center. They are the first U.S. junior competitors to compete at the senior world championships since 1997.

Barnes and Teela are former MWSC team members.

Currier will next compete Thursday in the men’s 20K individual race.
