Bapst, Lynx to tangle in semis MA ousts Lions; JB rips Mustangs

BANGOR – Not everything clicked perfectly for No. 3 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln or No. 2 John Bapst of Bangor, but both came out of the Bangor Auditorium as big winners just the same Friday night.

The MA Lynx of Lincoln used solid defense, fine shooting and huge bench play to beat No. 11 Belfast 50-23, and the Crusaders rode defensive pressure and guard play to eliminate No. 7 Mount View of Thorndike 57-35 in Eastern Maine Class B quarterfinal action.

The 18-2 Lynx earned a second straight trip to the semis and will take on 19-1 Bapst at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday.

In the first game, the Lynx earned a trip to the semis for the second year in a row.

Mattanawcook forward Brianna Hanscom had game highs in points (14) and rebounds (7) for the Lynx (18-2).

MA guard Michelle Paul, who tied a tourney record for most 3-pointers in a game (6) last year, struggled from the field against the Lions. She went 1-for-8 overall and 0-for-4 from 3-point range while being tightly guarded by Belfast freshman Julie Harris.

But Paul found other ways to contribute, including a 6-for-9 effort from the free-throw line and six assists. She assisted on three first-quarter baskets by Hanscom.

“Our guards were dishing off to me and I made the shots,” Hanscom said. “They were falling today.”

Hanscom made four of her eight shots and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Mattanawcook’s bench came through while Paul had trouble finding her shot. Guard Katelyn DeRaps scored 10 points, while center Marge Nesin chipped in with six. Guard Brittany Piche gave the Lynx good defensive minutes in addition to a first-quarter 3-pointer that made it 11-3 lead with 57 seconds left.

DeRaps had a 3-pointer with 1:01 left in the first half and Nesin put in a pass from Hanscom’s sister, Brooke Hanscom, with about six seconds left to make it 27-8 at halftime.

“Everybody on our team can shoot,” Brianna Hanscom said. “We have tons of weapons.”

MA had a 37-30 rebounding advantage. Kristy Burleigh had seven rebounds for the Lynx and Brooke Hanscom contributed six.

The Lynx also forced 19 turnovers but made a few themselves trying to get the ball inside.

Danielle Littlefield and Brittany Dyer each scored five points for the Lions (9-11). Belfast missed some open layups early, which translated into a 10-for-48 game from the field against MA’s mix of man and zone defenses.

“We got good shots early, but it was a matter of confidence that took us out of the game,” Belfast coach Meg Cressler said. “Our defense was good, but we knew they were going to be quick, and they were that. We just couldn’t score.”

In the second game, the Crusaders found the going tougher than usual inside against one of the few tourney teams able to match up with them, size-wise.

“We wanted to be slow and patient and get the ball inside, but against their size, we didn’t have a lot of luck doing that early,” said JB coach Mike Webb.

That left it to Bapst guards Morgan Chasse, Eve Jordan and Sam Maquillan, who combined for 24 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and – ironically – three of the Crusaders’ four blocked shots.

“Everybody talks about our size, but our guards don’t get a lot of respect,” Webb said. “Jordan, McQuillan and Chasse help us spread the floor and they’re very hard to guard.”

Chasse led the way with 19 points.

“We try to drive hard to the basket and create opportunities,” Chasse said. “And even though it was a slow game, we wanted to make sure we had more possessions, and we did.”

Bapst took just 36 shots to Mount View’s 50, but shot much better (47.2 percent to 28), outrebounded the Mustangs (31-25), and created many more opportunities at the line – canning 22 of 34 free throws to Mount View’s 7-for-17 effort.

Bapst seemed sluggish at times and committed 18 turnovers to Mount View’s 12, but Webb was still pleased with the team’s overall play.

“We had no time to prepare for this one after playing a game last night,” he said. “When we went through a 20-minute walk-through after school today for Mount View, that was it for our preparation.”

Bapst forwards Samantha Gormley and Hillary LaFerriere combined for 21 points and 16 rebounds.

Dakota McAdam led the 13-7 Mustangs with 15 points and eight rebounds despite missing some time with a left shoulder injury.
