Two 17-year-olds were charged with assault after getting into an altercation with a convenience store clerk late Thursday in Bangor.
Bangor police were called to the Big Apple store on State Street just before 10:30 p.m. for a report of a possible assault. Upon their arrival, police saw two juveniles, a male and a female, standing on the corner of Adams and State streets.
The juveniles, whose names were not released, told police the convenience store clerk became belligerent after they asked for matches and that he later assaulted the 17-year-old male. But the unnamed clerk said it was the 17-year-old male who became hostile inside the store when the employee demanded to see an ID for the matches.
The clerk said the male suspect then drew him outside and assaulted him. The female juvenile also reportedly kicked the clerk while he and the other juvenile were scuffling on the ground, according to a police report.
Three witnesses also described the juveniles punching, kicking or hitting the clerk outside the store, the report stated.
Police later restrained both juveniles on-site after they became verbally abusive to the officers, according to the report.
The male suspect was charged with assault, disorderly conduct and possession of tobacco by a minor while the female was charged with assault. (Kevin Miller, BDN)
