BANGOR – The only basket Dylan Smith made all day was the only one the Camden Hills boys basketball team needed.
Smith’s jumper with about seven seconds left in overtime lifted the No. 3 Windjammers of Rockport to a 61-60 victory over No. 2 Presque Isle in an Eastern Maine Class B semifinal game Wednesday afternoon at the Bangor Auditorium.
The Windjammers (20-1) survived a stellar game by Presque Isle’s Adam Kingsbury and their own shooting woes, to move into the regional final Saturday afternoon. Camden Hills will face unbeaten top seed Maranacook of Readfield, which beat No. 6 Mattanawcook of Lincoln 89-70 Wednesday’s other semifinal.
“We didn’t really feel like the second seed, and I doubt seriously if anybody else outside of Presque Isle, Maine, thought we were gonna compete in this game,” Presque Isle coach Tim Prescott said. “Camden’s an excellent team, they’re deep and talented, and our kids just did exactly what we’ve done all year. We made it ugly [and] Adam was phenomenal.”
Kingsbury finished with a game-high 31 points, including a 17-footer that put the Wildcats up 60-59 with about 27 seconds left in overtime.
It seemed as if that was the basket that would end it for Presque Isle, which had a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter. It was likely no one in the Auditorium, however, was counting on Smith for the winning shot.
Smith was 0-for-3 in the game before he found himself inside the 3-point line on the right and got a pass from Paul Campbell.
“I didn’t have that [good] of a game, but I kept my head high and hoped for the best when I hit that shot,” Smith said. “Paul Campbell just saw me out of the corner of his eye. We were looking to shoot the ball. I didn’t expect to get it. … You can’t not shoot that. You’ve gotta shoot it.”
Camden Hills had a 59-55 lead with 54.6 seconds left but Nathan Ackerson put back an offensive rebound, drew a foul and made the free throw.
Presque Isle had a nine-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Windjammer freshman Tyler McFarland tied it at 54-54 off a pass from classmate Graham Safford with nine seconds left to send it to overtime.
The Wildcats’ zone defense in regulation forced the Windjammers outside, where they went 4-for-17 from 3-point range and 24-for-73 overall.
Christian Pieri and Gordon Fischer scored 14 points for Camden Hills. Safford scored 12. Presque Isle’s Russ Mortland added 14 points.
“All the Xs and Os mean nothing now,” Prescott said. “Our kids played their hearts out. I’m the proudest guy in America right now.”
In the second game, the Maranacook Black Bears followed up one of their worst shooting games of the season with one of their best, knocking down a tourney-record 12 3-pointers out of 23 attempts and shooting a scalding 54.4 percent from the field overall.
“They shot incredibly from behind the line, even when we had them defended well,” said MA coach Rick Sinclair, whose Lynx finished 16-5. “We knew coming in if this game was in the 80s, we were in trouble and they had 50 at halftime.”
Junior forward Devin Gerrtity led the 20-0 Bears’ long-distance barrage with 5-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc en route to 20 points.
“He was on fire,” said Will Bardaglio, who also scored 20. “They like to play a half-court game, slow it down and score around 50, but we got them to go up and down with us.”
Fellow senior guard Ryan Martin scored 27 points to go with five rebounds and four assists, but it was Gerrity who may have been the key player.
“Our initial game plan was to allow Gerrity a little bit of space and help off of him, but on their first possession, they found him in the corner and he hit a 3,” said Sinclair.
“This is probably one of the best games of his varsity career, but he didn’t try to do too much,” said Schmidt. “That’s the beauty of this team is guys know their roles.”
Lynx senior guard Derek Libbey hit five 3-pointers and led all scorers with 29 on 50 percent shooting. Senior center Tyler White had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Brady Vose scored 14 points and Jeremy Langevin added 10.
As hot as the Black Bears’ outside shooting was, they didn’t neglect the paint. Maranacook outrebounded the halfcourt-oriented Lynx 12-10 on the offensive boards and 38-26 overall.
“We sometimes do get too focused on our guard play, but as good as they are, you still need to go to your big guys and at least look to get the ball in the paint,” Schmidt said. “Today we did a nice job distributing the ball.”
Point guard Mike Poulin had a great all-around effort for the Bears with nine points, a game-high seven assists and six rebounds while also guarding Libbey most of the game.
Maranacook never trailed in the game, scored 19 of the game’s first 23 points, and never led by less than 10 points in the last 27 minutes.
