HERMON – Connecticut singer and pianist Michael Brown will present a concert of gospel, rock, blues and jazz 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Morgan Hill Event Center.

The event will benefit Caring Connections, a program of the Bangor Y and Eastern Maine Medical Center that provides free breast and cervical health services to uninsured or underinsured women age 40 and over.

Brown said that his parents are not musically gifted, but he and his siblings all became singers or musicians.

Without lessons, the 4-year-old Brown began to play the upright piano at his family’s home in Bridgeport, Conn., and discovered an ability he calls his “gift from heaven.”

Brown and his sisters formed a group, the Brown Specials, and sang at churches, colleges and for special causes in New York and Connecticut.

At age 12, Brown directed and accompanied his first choir. He began writing songs in the mid-1970s. After signing with CBS Records, he recorded two singles, “Love Talk” and “Dancing to Your Music,” which was featured on “American Bandstand” and earned the show’s highest rating.

Brown also has written jingles for Kentucky Fried Chicken, Miller Highlife and Greyhound.

Brown has traveled worldwide to share his music. He teaches music at the Salisbury School in Salisbury, Conn., where he conducts the gospel choir. He also conducts the gospel choir at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeview, Conn.

Brown’s concert to benefit Caring Connections was arranged by friend Kathy Klegg.

“This is a cause very dear to my heart,” said Brown, whose mother died of breast cancer. “Music has a unique and special way of lifting people with a disease such as breast cancer and other maladies to a higher place. This is a place where disease and other earthly concerns don’t exist, a place of love, spiritual restoration and joy.”

Tickets for the concert are $15, $8 for children under 12. To reserve tickets and tables, call 848-7100.

Sponsors of the concert are Bacon Printing of Bangor and Art by Kathy Klegg of Hermon.
