Table tipping topic of workshop

BANGOR – A table-tipping workshop will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Harrison D. Barrett Spiritualist Church, 514 Broadway, next to the Coldwell Banker office.

Table tipping is a form of psychic phenomenon in which a table turns, tilts or rises off the ground when individuals place their fingertips on the surface, according to the Web site of the Paranormal Research Team based on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom. The table moves without the participants’ conscious exercise of muscular force.

“The workshop will literally be hands on,” Betty Simpson, church treasurer and secretary, said Wednesday. “All who attend will be able to participate.”

Simpson said she understands people might be skeptical.

“The first time I saw it,” she said, “there were four people sitting at a table and, when it moved, I thought they had to have moved the table.”

When Simpson actually sat at the table, she said she found out for herself it was “energy and entity” making it move.

Table tipping or turning dates to ancient times, according to the British group, but became popular in the mid-19th century with the spread of modern Spiritualism from the United States to Europe.

“Spiritualism is the science, philosophy and religion of continuous life, based upon the demonstrated fact of communication, by means of mediumship, with those who live in the spirit world,” according to information on the Web site for the National Spiritualist Association of Churches base in Lily Dale, N.Y.

As the population contemplates the current conditions in the world today, according to the Web site, people who explore Spiritualism are seeking a greater understanding of the purpose of life and what can be done to improve individual life situations and the circumstances of the world.

Spiritualism provides the knowledge that by using prayer and meditation, believers can become more aware of their responsibilities to themselves and to others. Through the inner awareness and guidance received through spirit communications, Spiritualists believe, a person can take the necessary actions to improve his or her own life and contributes to the improved welfare of the entire human race.
