NORRIDGEWOCK – A Somerset County sheriff’s deputy was bumped and bruised and required some stitches but escaped serious injury in a head-on collision between his cruiser and a pickup truck.

According to Maine State Police, Deputy Eugene Cole was responding to a 911 hang-up call Saturday morning when he lost control of his car on an icy stretch of Route 2 in Norridgewock. His cruiser veered into oncoming traffic, collided with the truck, flew over an embankment and rolled onto its side.

It took nearly an hour to extricate Cole from his car with the Jaws of Life. He was taken to a hospital and then released after treatment.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries and declined medical treatment.
