Across the cove a woman’s scream

a peal of girlish laughter

Loons

First time, never a sound before

a cry so loud, the decibel force of it

answer and reply

answer and reply

sad-sweet skirl of melody. Far distant,

two wet black heads, almost entwined,

slipped beneath the water’s edge. Silent.

Disappeared.

Loons

The black and white geometry

The undulating flow

of beak and neck and eye.

Swimming. Their backs

like

white

spotted

endless night sky.

Loons.

Michael Campagnoli lives in Rockland. His collection of poetry “Ah-Meddy-Ga” is available from All Nations Press of White Marsh, Va.
