Yarmouth, Mt. Blue win EM skiers stand out in skimeister competition

Yarmouth swept the boys and girls Class B state skiing championships at Black Mountain in Rumford and Sunday River in Newry that concluded Saturday.

In Class A, Mt. Blue took both the girls and boys championships in a three-day meet that finished Thursday.

Five skiers from Eastern Maine schools turned in strong overall efforts as Camden Hills’ Hannah Vigue won the Class A girls skimeister competition while Hampden Academy’s Morgan Burke finished second.

Mt. Blue’s Peter Smith won the Class A boys skimeister honors while Camden Hills’ Andrew Baxter was second.

In Class B, Presque Isle’s Lucas Mathers placed second in the boys’ skimeister competition.

The Yarmouth girls finished with 178 points. Mount Abram of Strong was second with 225, followed by Maranacook of Readfield (283), Fryeburg (296), Falmouth (389), Mountain Valley of Rumford (470), Presque Isle (515) an Lake Region of Naples (640).

The boys of Yarmouth finished 90 points ahead of second- place Maranacook, 154-244. Fryeburg was third with 286, followed by Caribou (355), Presque Isle (380), Falmouth (406), Mountain Valley (453) and Mount Abram (549).

Yarmouth skiers also took both the boys and girls skimeister honors.

Julianna Lord finished three points ahead of Mount Abram’s Erica Luce as Lord had 64 points to Luce’s 67. Lord finished third in the cross country classical and 10th in the freestyle while she was 21st in the slalom and 30th in the giant slalom.

Jack Gross of Yarmouth had 34 points to win the boys skimeister. Presque Isle’s Mathers was second best with 42 points. Gross finished in the top 13 in all four events. He was fifth in the slalom, sixth in giant slalom, 10th in cross country classical and 13th in cross country freestyle.

Mathers was runnerup in the giant slalom, eighth in slalom, 12th in cross country freestyle and 20th in cross country classical.

On Saturday, Joey Bard of Caribou won the boys cross country classical with a time of 13 minutes, 33.3 seconds over the 5-kilometer course. He was followed by Presque Isle’s Corey Park (14:05.6).

The pair also finished 1-2 on Thursday in the cross country freestyle. Bard was first with 11:40.8 and Park was second with a time of 12:21.4.

In Class A, the Mt. Blue girls finished two points better than Greely (223-225) and the Mt. Blue boys were over 100 points better than second-best Leavitt (179-295).

Camden Hills’ Vigue won the girls skimeister with 89 points and Hampden’s Burke was second with 108 points.

Vigue was 11th in the slalom, 20th in giant slalom, 25th in cross country classical and 33rd in cross country freestyle. Burke placed 19th in cross country freestyle, 23rd in giant slalom, 32nd in cross country classical and 34th in slalom.

For the boys, Mt. Blue’s Smith won the skimeister with 49 points to Camden Hills’ Baxter with 76 points. Smith was sixth in slalom, seventh in giant slalom, 17th in cross country classical and 19th in cross country freestyle. Baxter was ninth in giant slalom, fifth in slalom, 32 in freestyle and 30th in classical cross country.
