Two chances to see Bangor Rotary performance

You have two opportunities to see the Bangor Rotary Club’s third annual “Music Off Broadway” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1, and 3 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at Peakes Auditorium at Bangor High School.

Producer Roger George announces that favorite, local performers including Nancy Dymond, Darlene Mogul and Steve Gormley will perform, and that “a great bunch of teenagers and young adults” will “bring down the house with show-stopping songs from ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘Hairspray,’ among others.”

Also, “a group of adorable young singers” will perform “Annie,” and the mother-daughter duo of Sue Hunt Gormley and Jane Hunt will be featured.

A local attorney, a state representative and many other well-known individuals are part of the program that “will have the audience tapping their feet, drying their eyes, laughing and wanting to sing along throughout,” George added.

Kevin Bate is the artistic director, Stephanie Dunham the choreographer, and John Haskell the music director.

“I appreciate all of the energy that our company gives,” George stated.

“It’s wonderful to have so much local talent to showcase each year.”

Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors 65 and older, and $10 for youth 17 and under.

Tickets are available in Bangor at The Grasshopper Shop and BookMarc’s downtown, Mr. Paperback at the Airport Mall, and Patrick’s Hallmark on Broadway.

Patron’s seating for $30 can be obtained from any Bangor Rotary Club member.

Proceeds benefit local and international Rotary scholarships, grants and charitable contributions.

Sara Yasner, United Way of Eastern Maine Camp Bangor program director, reminds parents and guardians of Bangor schoolchildren in grades three through six that they and their children should plan to attend the rescheduled UWEM Camp Fair from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Bangor Civic Center.

Children in those grades, enrolled in Bangor schools, are eligible for a variety of free summer camping scholarships that will enable them to attend any Maine summer camp or camps listed in the 2008 Camp Bangor Directory.

The only eligibility requirements are that the youngster meets good citizenship guidelines and volunteers in the community.

Camp Bangor is funded by the Libra Foundation, a private foundation established by late philanthropist Elizabeth Noyes.

Cynthia Scott, executive director of Pine Tree Hospice in Dover-Foxcroft, wrote PTH is preparing for its volunteer training sessions and “is seeking volunteers to provide friendship and companionship … to hospice clients and their caregivers.”

The next series of PTH volunteer training sessions begins Friday, Feb. 29.

The remaining sessions are Saturday, March 1; Friday, March 7; and Saturday, March 8. A $20 processing fee will cover materials.

“Hospice volunteers offer help, friendship, companionship and bereavement support to clients’ families,” Scott wrote, adding that “volunteers also provide indirect services such as errands and meals.”

Volunteers are of “all ages, faiths and walks of life, who serve clients in their community, depending on their availability.”

Michael Gleason e-mailed that because of a calendar conflict with an early Palm Sunday and Easter, this year, St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Brewer has scheduled its second annual Celtic Festival for March 1-2.

The Rev. Barbara Clarke and members of St. Patrick’s invite you to enjoy an authentic Irish supper of corned beef and cabbage at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at the church on the corner of North Main and Holyoke streets in Brewer.

After dinner at 7 p.m., you will be entertained by a special performance featuring the Thomas School of Dance Irish Step-Dancers, the Bangor High School Fiddlers and two Celtic bagpipers.

During dinner, you can also participate in a silent auction.

Tickets for dinner and entertainment are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 10.

Seating is limited. Advance tickets are available at Thomas School of Dance, 14 State St. in Bangor or through the church. Calls will be returned to those leaving a message on the church phone at 989-1308.

To complete the Celtic Festival, everyone is welcome to attend a Celtic Eucharist at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 2, at the church.
