ArtWorks for children

ORONO – The University of Maine art department is accepting applications for the spring 2008 after-school ArtWorks program for area children in kindergarten through seventh grade.

ArtWorks classes will be held 3:30-5 p.m. Fridays, March 21-April 18, at Lord Hall on the Orono campus.

ArtWorks is a longstanding program that gives UM art education students classroom experience with children while providing art lessons for community youngsters. Laurie Hicks, professor of art, will supervise the classes.

The application deadline is Monday, March 10. Seats will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis until the class maximum of 22 students is reached. A waiting list of alternates will be kept in the event of cancellations. Students are grouped by age for classes and will have an opportunity to work with a variety of art materials.

A $25 course fee covers the cost of materials. A limited number of scholarships are available.

To obtain more information or registration forms, e-mail Laurie Hicks at laurie.hicks@umit.maine.edu or call the art department at 581-3245

Class for home-schoolers

HOLDEN – Fields Ponds Audubon Center will offer a one-day program to allow home school students the chance to explore the future effects of climate change on Maine and its wildlife. The class will convene 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, at the center.

“Today’s children may not have created the situation leading to climate change, but they are the generation charged to find sustainable solutions to the problems it will create,” said program educator Ruth Perry. “This program will help students get a grasp on what environmental changes they might face right in their home state and what they can do about them.”

Students 8 to 14 will have opportunities to define global warming, play a game to see how proper car maintenance can lessen a carbon footprint, predict climate change’s effects on plant and animal ranges, and investigate what Maine’s coastline could look like in the future. The students will take a walk around the meadows and forests of the sanctuary to consider how its ecosystems could change with a transition to a warmer climate.

Students should bring snacks, drinks and lunches.

To register, call 989-2591. Enrollment is limited to 15 students. The cost is $25 per student for Maine Audubon members, $30 others.
