I was pleased to see the BDN Feb. 26 editorial left the door ajar for a rebirth of nuclear power in Maine. Just like most other technologies in our lives – computers, cell phones and Internet – nuclear power technology has improved dramatically since Maine Yankee was commissioned in 1972. Since Maine Yankee was designed and built, the latest reactor rod recycling technology has been able to mitigate waste disposal.

The cost to bring a new nuclear plant on line will depend to a large extent on how much money is spent by groups opposing the plant. We all love renewables, but unfortunately Maine doesn’t have much choice. Renewables will never supply more than 15 percent of our energy needs and Maine’s economy can’t stand to be at the mercy of oil companies indefinitely. Even now, the cost to heat our homes with electricity looks better and better as home heating oil prices exceed $3 per gallon.
