Currier, McNamee to compete in championships

FORT KENT – The Maine State Biathlon Championships will be held Saturday and Sunday at the 10th Mountain Ski Center.

Mass start competitions will take place Saturday night and a pursuit is scheduled for Sunday morning.

Current and former Maine Winter Sports Center team members Russell Currier of Stockholm, who competed in last month’s world championships, along with World Cup regular Tracy Barnes, Fort Fairfield native and world junior championship team member Hilary McNamee, and BethAnn Chamberlain are all set to appear.

Saturday’s schedule includes an introductory biathlon clinic and open training in the morning, followed by a shooting and pursuit competition in the moose age group (ages 9-and-under), then another clinic, rifle zeroing, and the 5 p.m. mass start for men and women (ages 16-and-over), novice men and women (15-16), boys and girls (14-15) and middle-school boys and girls.

Sunday’s activities start at 9 a.m. with zeroing, followed by the 10 a.m. pursuit for men, women, boys, girls, novices and middle schoolers. The age groups younger than 16 will not carry rifles during the competitions, but will pick up a rifle when they get to the shooting point of their choice.

Rifles and ammunition will be provided for all introductory clinics and non-carrying categories.

The moose and middle-school competitors will use air rifles. The rest of the competitors will use a standard .22-caliber rifle.
