Contested races for a seat on the Board of Selectman, school board and road commissioner and proposed changes to current town policies will highlight this year’s annual town meeting.
Incumbent Selectman Harry Dean Potter is being challenged by Mark Brundage in his quest for another three-year term. Edward Robert Temple and Donald Barrett are competing for a three-year term on the school board, and Scott Childs and Dusty Haskell are squaring off for a one-year term as road commissioner. Town clerk Sheila McCarty is unopposed in her race for re-election.
Voting will take place 1-8 p.m. Friday, March 7, at the Palermo town office. The town meeting will reconvene at the Palermo Consolidated School at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 8.
Besides acting on the municipal and school budgets, residents also will be asked to consider changing the elected offices of tax collector, treasurer and town clerk to appointed positions. They also are being asked to change the current policy of having those collecting revenues for the town to submit bids for their positions and replace them with positions with a fixed salary.
There are 58 articles on this year’s warrant, compared with 35 in an average year, town clerk McCarty reported.
