Maine loses 5th straight game

MIAMI – Javier Sujo’s run-scoring single broke a 5-5 tie in a three-run third inning and he also had an RBI single in the five-run fifth inning that broke the game open as Florida International University outslugged the University of Maine 13-6 Wednesday.

Maine, 4-5, suffered its fifth straight loss.

FIU finished its 11-game homestand with a 5-6 mark.

Tyler Townsend had a run-scoring double in the fifth with Ryan Mollica and Raimy Fuentes also chipping in with RBI singles.

Castillo and Kevin Mirabal had three hits apiece to pace the 17-hit attack. Mollica, Fuentes, Townsend, John Petika and Sujo had two hits each with Townsend and Castillo belting two-run homers.

Old Town’s Jarrett Lukas and Portland’s Joey Martin had three hits each to key Maine’s 16-hit outburst with Kevin Jackson, Danny Menendez and Brewer’s Kevin McAvoy collecting two apiece. Jackson had his first collegiate homer, a solo shot.

James Lajiness picked up the win with four innings of seven-hit, three-run ball before Jorge Marban (1 inning) and Dan DeSimone (3 innings) shut down Maine the rest of the way.

Joel Thorney took the loss.

At N. Charlotte, Fla., Jake Brown drove in three runs, Chris Fishburn had three hits and Adam Sargent pitched 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief as Thomas More (Ky.) salvaged a split with St. Joseph’s College of Standish.

In the opener, Dustin Spiller and Winterport’s Pat Moran had two hits and three runs-batted in apiece to pace the Monks with Brian Schools contributing three hits and Luke Enman and Owls Head’s Wade Oliver adding two hits apiece.

Enman knocked in a pair of runs.

Brad Ketterer had three hits for Thomas More with Pat Berndsen, Spencer Franzreb and Johnny Lee chipping in with two each off winning pitcher Andrew Keirstead, who pitched a 14-hit complete game.

In the second game, Hampden’s Ian Lee drove in three runs for St. Joseph’s and Ben Grant-Roy had two hits including a homer.
