South Florida nips Black Bears in 7th

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Alison Savarese hit a bases loaded single to left field in the bottom of the seventh to drive in the winning run and give the University of South Florida a 5-4 win over the University of Maine in the USF Tournament.

Maine’s other game against North Carolina State was postponed to Sunday due to thunderstorms.

JoJo Medina doubled and singled with two RBIs for the USF. Savarese had two RBIs.

Kristen Calvetti had a two-run single in the sixth for the Black Bears.

Stephanie George hit an RBI double in the fifth and Whitney Spangler singled and knocked in a run.

St. Joseph’s loses a pair

At Cape Coral, Fla., Michelle Shambeau scattered seven hits over eight innings to outduel Kiera Walsh and Wisconsin-Lutheran pushed across an eighth-inning run to beat St. Joseph’s College 4-3 Thursday.

Amber Matthews pitched a six-hit shutout in the opener as Tri-State University (Ind.) blanked St. Joseph’s 4-0.

In the opener, Matthews struck out seven and didn’t walk anybody and Brittney Stensland drove in three runs with a pair of hits and Sallie Richardson had three hits.

Christy Wezowicz allowed eight hits in a complete-game outing for St. Joseph’s.

In the nightcap, Jamie Matz hit a two-run homer and Emily Foster had two hits for the winners.

Liz Jordan had two hits for St. Joseph’s.
