Kaubris leads Bowdoin to tourney win Brandeis eliminates USM

BRIDGEWATER, Mass., Bowdoin outscored Bridgewater State by 14 points in the second half to earn a 64-49 women’s basketball win in an NCAA Division III Championship first-round game Friday night.

Alexa Kaubris led Bowdoin with 19 points, four assists and four steals. Caitlin Hynes and Sabrina Cote each scored 10 points.

Caitlin Feeney scored 19 points to pace Bridgewater State and Colleen Feeney added 15 points and 18 rebounds.

At Union, N.J., senior Jaime Capra scored 25 points and provided four assists to lead Brandeis University to victory over the University of Southern Maine of Gorham in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship.

Amber Strodthoff scored 13 points for the Judges and Lauren Rashford added eight points and four steals.

Stacey Kent led the Huskies with 22 points. Angela Santa Fe added 20 points and eight rebounds and Nicole Paradis provided nine assists.

Saint Joseph’s sweeps

At North Charlotte, Fla., Saint Joseph’s College of Standish scored nine runs in the top of the ninth to defeat Olivet College 17-14 in the first game in the Port Charlotte Invitational. The Monks beat Misericordia 16-7 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Luke Enman hit a triple and three singles and scored three runs for Saint Joseph’s. Dustin Spiller tripled and singled with three RBIs and Ben Grant-Roy had two singles and three RBIs. Brian School hit three singles and scored two runs.

Brandon Goodman led Olivet with a triple, double and single with four runs scored and three RBIs. Braydon LaFramboise had two singles and drove in three runs.

In the second game, Eric LaBatte homered, tripled and singled with two RBIs for the Monks and Grant-Roy added a double and three singles with two RBIs. Spiller hit two doubles and knocked in two runs.

Mike Murphy tripled and singled with three RBIs for Misericordia and Chris Messa had two singles and two RBIs.

Softball

Maine gets swept

At Clearwater, Fla., Katie Kelly scored the winning run in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single to centerfield by Ashley Mora as Jacksonville University defeated the University of Maine in the first game in the University of South Florida Invitational. North Carolina State shutout Maine in the second game, 8-0.

In the first game, Patricia Melo, Kelly McKeon and Amber Moseley each had two singles and an RBI for the Dolphins.

Terren Hall doubled and knocked in all three runs for the Black Bears. Kali Burnham singled twice and scored a run.

In the second game,Allison Presnell homered and singled with three RBIs for NC State and Alyssa Allbritten doubled and singled and drove in a run.

Whitney Spangler and Ashley Waters singled for Maine’s only hits.

Saint Joseph’s wins two

At Fort Myers, Fla., Jillian Kimball hit a double and drove in three runs as Saint Joseph’s College posted 10 runs in the second inning to defeat Dominican University 10-2 in the second game of the Gene Curtis Classic. The Monks also won 9-3 against Rockford College in the first game.

In the first game, Kim Bechard doubled and singled with an RBI to lead Saint Joseph’s. Alyssa Dunn and Megan Farrell each had a single and knocked in a run.

Jessica Starr doubled and drove in two runs for Rockford and Christina Koblosh singled twice.

In the second game, Dunn had a double and a single with two RBIs for the Monks and Ellen Neff drove in two runs. Liz Jordan singled three times and Kayla Soucy doubled and singled.

Sara Minaglia singled and scored a run for Dominican and Megan day drove in a run.

At Waltham, Mass., Andrew Hippert scored 16 points and provided five assists to help lead Bowdoin College past Curry College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Bowdoin advance to play host Brandeis University at 7 tonight.

Kyle Jackson also led Bowdoin with 16 points. Mike Hauser scored 11 points and Mark Phillips added 10 points.
