CARIBOU – The Maine State Biathlon Championships scheduled for this weekend in Fort Kent have been cancelled because of a forecast for bad traveling weather.

Maine Winter Sports Center biathlon coach Gary Colliander said in a release the MWSC consulted with 10th Mountain Ski Club, which was to host the event, and the National Weather Service and decided to call off the championships.

The National Weather Service is predicting 15 to 20 feet of snow from two storms expected to hit northern Aroostook County. The forecast also calls for high winds starting Saturday afternoon.

“Thinking about the safety of those traveling and the ability to put on a quality event with such conditions, it was decided not to hold the event,” Colliander said.

The championships were to have been held Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

The event will return next year, Colliander added.
