LANTANA, Fla. – The University of Maine’s Black Bears snapped their six-game losing streak, but managed only one win in three baseball games over the weekend.

The Black Bears split two games Saturday, dropping a 3-1 decision to Air Force in 10 innings before earning an 8-7 victory over Ohio State.

Penn defeated Maine 11-3 on Sunday.

Penn’s Steve Gable had four singles and knocked in two runs. Jeremy Maas had three RBIs and Kyle Armeny hit a double and two singles while driving in two runs.

Billy Cather paced Maine with two singles and a home run. Joey Martin doubled and drove in a run and Myckie Lugbauer had a single and an RBI. Curt Smith added a double.

In Saturday’s second game, Portland’s Martinstroked a two-run single to highlight a four-run seventh inning that gave UMaine the upper hand.

Sophomore righthander Joe Miller (2-0) earned the win, allowing six hits and four earned runs in eight innings. Matt Jebb got the save, recording the final out in relief of Kyle Benoit with the potential tying run at second base.

Martin finished with two hits for the Bears while Tony Patane doubled and singled and Joe Mercurio singled twice.

J.B. Shuck paced Ohio State with two singles and an RBI. The Buckeyes committed four errors and had three passed balls, resulting in three unearned runs.

The Bears snapped a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh. Patane singled to left, Smith walked and Lugbauer singled to right, loading the bases.

Martin hit a two-run single to left, giving UMaine the lead for good. Three passed balls pushed the next two runs across.

UMaine tallied the eventual game-winner in the eighth after two were out. Patane rapped a double to left, took third on a wild pitch and scored when the catcher’s throw went into left field.

In Saturday’s opener, freshman lefthander Kevin Scanlan allowed only one run on four hits in 7 1/3 innings, but Air Force outlasted the Bears’ bullpen.

In the 10th, Shay Derbigny drew a leadoff walk against Jim Cox of Bangor, who was lifted in favor of Boothbay’s Will Carroll (0-3).

Derbigny stole second and scored on Addison Gentry’s double to right field. Ben Ausbun walked, before Jon McMahon advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. After an intentional walk, Matt Alexander made it 3-1 with a sacrifice fly.

Mercurio opened the UMaine 10th with a double, but was left stranded.

Starter Jake Petro allowed only one run on four hits through eight innings for Air Force, while Michael Ruvolo worked two scoreless innings of relief to the get win.

Lugbauer singled twice and knocked in the only run for the Bears to tie the game in the ninth inning. Smith tripled and Mercurio doubled for UMaine.

McMahon poked a double and two singles to lead the Falcons.
