Bowdoin teams ousted Polar Bears fall in second round

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Amanda Otieno’s 3-pointer with 48.5 seconds left broke a 58-58 tie and gave the Amherst Lord Jeffs a 61-60 women’s basketball victory over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament Saturday.

Bowdoin College of Brunswick cut the deficit to one on a Jill Anelauskas basket, but failed to convert two other chances to tie or go ahead.

The loss ended the Polar Bears’ streak of “Sweet 16” appearances at seven.

Alexa Kaubris paced Bowdoin with 14 points, while Maria Noucas posted 12 points and six rebounds. Colleen Sweeney added 10 points.

Shaina Pollack scored a game-high 23 points for Amherst and Stefanie Reiff added 10.

Penn State 5, Maine 1

At Clearwater, Fla., Hollee Haines homered and singled to drive in three runs and help push Penn State by Maine Saturday.

Desi Giordano doubled and singled with an RBI for Penn State and Jen Acunto also hit a double and a single.

Terren Hall, Alexis Souhlaris, Kirstin Allen and Erin Iandoli singled to lead Maine. Stephanie George drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk.

Gettysburg 9, Husson 2

At St. Petersburg, Fla., Kevin Langhauser hit four singles and scored two runs to help push Gettysburg College to victory over Husson College of Bangor in the Tampa Bay Tournament Saturday.

Mike Backus had a double and two singles with an RBI for the Bullets. Dave Olson and Andrew Burton each singled three times.

Logan York and Brian McGinley singled and knocked in a run to lead the Eagles. Ethan Guerette and Andrew Patterson also singled.

Men’s basketball

Brandeis 68, Bowdoin 53

At Waltham, Mass., Bowdoin went on a 16-2 second-half scoring surge to take a 38-37 lead after trailing by 13 at the half, but Brandeis responded with its own scoring surge to take the victory in the NCAA Div. III Tournament second-round game.

The loss ended the best-ever season for Bowdoin at 22-7.

Brandeis surged to a 53-42 lead with six minutes left and then nailed 12 of 14 free throws to secure the victory.

Kevin Olson led Brandeis with 15 points, Joe Coppens added 14, and Terrell Hollins netted 11.

Jordan Fliegel paced Bowdoin with 15 points and four assists. Mark Phillips chipped in with 12 points and Andrew Hippert added 10.
