MACHIAS – A 22-year-old East Machias man remained in the Washington County Jail on Sunday night charged with manslaughter in the death of his 2-year-old stepson, Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said Sunday night.

Police arrested William L. Bryson on Friday night in the death of Damon Edward Nason, also of East Machias.

Although details of the youngster’s death were sketchy Sunday night, sometime on Saturday, March 1, Nason was taken by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. The youngster died a day later.

Nason is survived by his mother, Tawnya Bryson, 28, of East Machias and his father, Jeremy Nason of Eastbrook. Funeral services for the youngster were held on Friday.

Bail for Bryson was set at $100,000. McCausland said that depending upon court availability, Bryson is expected to appear in Washington County Superior Court today or Tuesday.

This is the second homicide case in western Washington County in the past few months.

On Jan. 23, Richard W. Widdecombe Jr., 25, of Machias was charged with murder in the deaths of his former girlfriend Katie Cabana, 29, of Marshfield and her friend Aaron Settipani, 41, of Eastport. He also reportedly shot and wounded 6-year-old Autumn Rogers, Cabana’s daughter, who was treated at EMMC for what was described as a wound that wasn’t life-threatening.

Widdecombe also remains in the Washington County Jail.
