Winslow wins ‘B’ crown Biddeford rolls to Class A title

LEWISTON – Senior Nick Thorne hadn’t registered a point in Winslow High School’s wins over Houlton-Hodgdon and Gardiner in their Eastern Maine Class B title run.

He more than made up for it on Saturday.

Thorne scored with a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle 3:46 into overtime as the Black Raiders beat York 4-3 in the State Class B final at the Colisee after squandering a three-goal lead in the final six minutes of regulation.

In the Class A championship game, junior defenseman Brian Dumoulin had a goal and three assists as Biddeford beat Lewiston for the second straight year, 4-1, to cap a 24-0 season.

In the B game, Ben Grant’s first-period goal and second-period goals by Jeff Browne and Sean Bourgeois supplied the Black Raiders with a 3-0 lead.

But Dan Powers and Jake Posternak closed the gap to 3-2 and Devin Zucker forced the overtime by beating Winslow goalie Jesse Little with 31 seconds left.

It was Winslow’s first state title since 2000 and its 11th overall.

York was playing in its first state championship game.

Chad Guptil had a pair of assists for Winslow and Grant had one to go with his goal. Little finished with 37 saves.

Powers had an assist along with his goal and Nick Richard had a pair of assists. Andrew Loane made 27 stops.

Both teams wound up 17-5-1.

In the A game, Nick Reny’s 34th goal of the season, a shorthanded goal at the 9:57 mark of the second period, snapped a 1-1 tie and Dumoulin added an important insurance goal, his 13th, with 2:33 left in the third period. Cam Madore closed out the scoring with his 22nd just 46 seconds later.

Matt Letourneau opened the scoring for Lewiston 4:44 into the game but Trevor Fleurent’s power play goal tied it 2:22 later.

Letourneau’s goal was his 13th while Fleurent’s was his 14th.

Fleurent and Madore each had two assists to go with their goals and senior Tony Dube made 27 saves.

Freshman Cam Poussard had 26 stops for 19-4-1 Lewiston.
