‘Canes topple Bears

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Four University of Miami pitchers combined to allow one run on six hits over the final four innings as the Hurricanes pulled out a 7-4 college baseball victory over the University of Maine Wednesday night.

Coach Steve Trimper’s Black Bears (5-8) started the scoring in the top of the first, as Curt Smith connected for his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to right field.

UM added two runs in the top of the second. Kevin Mager drove home Brewer’s Kevin McAvoy, who had doubled, then Tony Patane followed with an RBI single to center.

The fourth-ranked Hurricanes (11-1) responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame off Bears starter Jimmy Cox of Bangor, all coming on Mark Sobolewski’s three-run homer.

Miami took a 4-3 lead an inning later when Yonder Alonso reached on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder’s choice.

The Black Bears tied it up in the fifth on Smith’s RBI single, but Miami’s bullpen shut the door from there.

The ‘Canes took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs off Jon Balentina, who took the loss for the Bears.

Alonso doubled and scored, then Sobolewski, who finished with three hits and five RBIs, knocked home Jason Haggerty with a single.

Ryan Perry’s RBI single off Ryan Forrest in the seventh capped the scoring.

Cox, who lasted just 1 2/3 innings, surrendered three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out one.

Matt Jebb pitched two solid innings for the Black Bears, giving up just one hit while allowing no runs, walking two and striking out four.

Justin Latta tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, surrendering just one hit while walking none and striking out a batter.

Mager and McAvoy each finished with two hits, while Billy Cather had a pair of singles for the Bears.

Kyle Bellamy earned the save for Miami.
