Husson College baseball coach John Winkin continues to make “steady progress” in his rehabilitation at a Waterville facility after he collapsed while jogging on Dec. 10.
That was the word from his son, David.
Winkin spent five days in the intensive care unit at Bangor’s Eastern Maine Medical Center before being transferred to the Waterville facility.
There is still a long way to go but David Winkin said there is “improvement every day.”
His father is able to speak and “you can definitely understand him.”
He can’t walk without assistance yet but “he’s getting there” according to his son.
David Winkin said his father has been getting a lot of visitors and “he appreciates that very much.”
The legendary coach, who has been replaced by interim coach Jason Harvey, has been inducted into seven Halls of Fame and has compiled a 1,043-706-8 record between his stints at Colby College, the University of Maine and Husson College.
He led Maine’s Black Bears to six College World Series appearances and two third-place finishes.
David Winkin said his dad “misses his players at Husson” and follows their progress.
Winkin was also a founding editor of Sport Magazine and has written four baseball books.
He has also been a columnist for Collegiate Baseball magazine and, every season, he is called upon to serve as a tournament director at an NCAA Division I regional, a super-regional or both.
