Let party be a gift to those who helped out

To people in other parts of the country March means it’s time to catch spring fever, while here in Maine we’re still trying to find a cure for cabin fever. After 22 snowstorms this winter, we’re still cooped up with weather that is nothing short of chilling. And if you’re a working or single parent, that stormy winter presented seven snow days that add up to a week of unpaid favors from family and friends who stepped in to take care of your kids.

When free time is at a premium, how can you possibly reciprocate for so much generous help? The fact is you barely have enough vacation time to cover your children’s inevitable sick days and a little summer time off, never mind school vacation time and all of those snow days.

There is something you can do. If you hold a “Cabin Fever” sleepover party for your children’s friends, your child will be a hit for having a “random” party while you will give the gift of free time to several people who deserve favors from you.

Although it is not a birthday party, the “Cabin Fever” fest will be most successful if you plan for it just as creatively. Begin by thinking hard about the invitation list. Since your first goal is to thank the adults who have helped you, consider inviting not just the child who is your son or daughter’s best friend, but the sibling or siblings of that child. This will completely free the parent or couple you want to thank.

To keep your guest list manageable, be sure to invite a few children who have no siblings, along with those who do. To avoid the discomfort of leaving someone out, plan now to hold a “Spring Fever” party during spring vacation, and mention this plan to the parents whose children are not included this time around.

To keep the party on a budget, give party favors that do double duty as refreshments and as craft supplies for your planned activity. Give each child a small bag of M&Ms to decorate the cupcakes you will serve. Wrap up for each a new box of crayons or markers and an inexpensive frame you’ve purchased in a bargain store.

Have the kids draw and frame self-portraits to give to their moms and dads. Not only will this keep your party guests occupied, but also the framed gift may serve to remind their parents how much you value their generous help. It may even incline some to help you again when spring vacation comes around.
