After consuming a few alcoholic beverages at The Tavern in downtown Bangor, a Dixmont man got into a fight with a stranger at the bar and pulled a knife.

Anthony Barnes, 27, was arrested at around 1:25 a.m. Sunday on Columbia Street when he took out a butterfly knife and attempted to stab the man he had met while drinking, according to Bangor police.

Barnes put the knife blade between his knuckles, and attempted to punch the victim, who was not identified, Lt. Tim Reid said Monday.

The blade scratched the man and cut his coat, but he did not need medical attention. Barnes was charged with aggravated assault, a Class B crime, because he used a weapon, possession of a weapon while under a protection order, and violation of bail conditions. Class B crimes can carry a fine of up to $20,000 and-or a jail sentence of up to 10 years. Reid did not have details on Barnes’ bail conditions or why he was on bail. Barnes had his first appearance in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Monday and remained in Penobscot County Jail that evening. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)

A Bangor man was seriously injured when he was hit by a vehicle while walking Sunday afternoon through the Olive Garden parking lot in Bangor.

Hugh Theriault, 53, was hit just after 4 p.m. by Shelly Simpson, 24, of Presque Isle, who was driving a 2000 Dodge SUV. He suffered a head injury and his injuries appeared to be quite serious, Lt. Tim Reid said Monday.

Theriault was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center. Police said he was in serious condition Monday afternoon but hospital officials released no information. The incident is still under investigation, since some of the witness left the scene before being interviewed, but no charges are expected, Reid said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
