Rosters are filling up for the Maine Sting and the Maine Tide, the two Bangor-based Premier Soccer League teams that will make their debuts in May.
Seth Brown, the vice president in charge of soccer operations, said the men’s team (Sting) has “14 confirmed players and the women’s team [Tide] has 12 right now.”
“We’re going to carry approximately 24 players on each team. So we’ll be looking for approximately 10 players for each through our tryouts,” added Brown, the men’s soccer coach at Husson College.
There will be a tryout March 29 from noon to 2 p.m. at Boucher Field on the campus of Husson College in Bangor and a call-back tryout April 27 from 12-2. Those who impress the coaches in the March 29 tryout will be invited to the April 27 session.
The fee is $25 per person.
The women’s team opens the season May 17 at 2 p.m. at home against Soccer Plus from Connecticut. The men’s team will open up May 24 at 1 p.m. against AC Diablos from Atlantic City, N.J.
The men’s game kicks off one of four doubleheaders as the women’s team will play the AC Diablos women’s team immediately after at 3:15.
The Premier Soccer Leagues are for high-level amateur players, mostly college-aged. They don’t get paid, so they retain their college eligibility.
The men’s team will play 10 regular-season games while the women’s team will play 12.
Atlanta’s Cheryl Stokes and Bangor native Brown, along with their Atlantic Sports Group, were awarded the franchises last fall. Stokes, the president of Atlantic Sports, is the general manager.
Brown said their rosters are composed of players from across North America.
“The men’s team has a player from as far away as Texas and the women’s team has a girl from Creighton University [Neb.] and two from Montana,” said Brown, who will also have players from Maine or colleges in Maine on the rosters.
“It’s going to be very diverse groups,” said Brown.
The men’s coach is University of Maine-Fort Kent men’s soccer coach and athletic director Bill Ashby while Mike Morgan was recently named the women’s coach. Morgan, of Lawrenceville, Ga., is the executive director of the College Experience Program of Blue Springs Youth Soccer Association.
Brown said they are continuing to sell sponsorships for the two teams.
Paddy Murphy’s restaurant and lounge in Bangor is sponsoring the jersey for the women’s team, and Savage Forest Enterprise from Mount Desert Island is sponsoring the shorts for both teams.
“The men’s jersey [sponsorship] is still for sale and we’re still selling field sponsorships. There are different programs available out there. We’ve been meeting with community and local businesses and trying to work with everyone,” said Brown.
“We’re pleased with our progress. We know we’re ahead on some things administratively and behind on some other things,” said Brown, who continue to sell season tickets.
The men’s playoffs begin the week of July 18 and the women’s playoffs start the following week, he said.
