Old Fort Western, the 1754 National Historic Landmark fort, store and house museum on the Kennebec River in downtown Augusta, will hold its 16th annual Maple Syrup Day 1-3 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at the fort.
Fort staff will tap trees, whittle spiles, and collect and boil sap, all in the 18th century manner. Hearth-baked corn bread with maple syrup will be available in the south kitchen.
Brief guided tours of the fort’s main house will be offered.
Maple Syrup Day at Old Fort Western is part of Maine Maple Sunday, a yearly event sponsored by the Maine Department of Agriculture and the Maine Maple Producers Association. Sugarhouses across Maine will be open for tours and special programs. Maine Maple Sunday is always held the fourth Sunday in March. Because that is Easter Sunday this year, some sugarhouses will hold events on other days. For details visit www.getrealmaine.com. For information about Old Fort Western visit www.oldfortwestern.org.
Admission to Maple Syrup Day at Old Fort Western is free, but a $5 donation is suggested. Call 626-2385 for information.
