Recent letters to the editor are pushing the concept of adopting dogs from animal shelters instead of buying from a pet store or a puppy mill. That is all well and good, but why is nobody mentioning buying a puppy from a reputable hobby breeder?
These breeders care about the health and well-being of their puppies. They know their breed and screen for the health issues that could affect them. Most are subject to kennel inspections, interview prospective owners before selling a puppy, have buyer contracts that include a spay-neuter clause and many also take puppies-dogs back any time if the owner is no longer able to care for them.
Many only breed one or two litters a year. Yes they “sell” their puppies, but after shots, microchipping, vet bills, stud fees and everyday care for eight to 12 weeks I don’t think most hobby breeders are in it for the money.
I am not a breeder, and I have adopted rescued animals. I also own purebred dogs I bought from responsible hobby breeders. The breeders suggested dogs with temperaments and conformation suited for my lifestyle and the activities I planned to do with them. I knew their pedigrees, made several visits to the kennels before taking the puppies home and had a good idea of what I was getting.
Yes, puppy mills are cruel and inhumane, but the state doesn’t have the money and staff to police them. I love my purebred dogs and will certainly buy from a responsible breeder again. I hate to think these breeders will be shut down by pending legislation and that I will be forced to go out of state to do so.
