There is a valid, nationwide campaign to eliminate puppy mills and mass production of dogs. Unfortunately, most legislation and public opinion addressing this issue penalizes responsible, ethical breeders of purebred dogs.

Recently, Maine legislation and public opinion have treated ethical breeders in the same restrictive way as puppy mills. It is unfair to group all breeders together without understanding the important role ethical breeders play in Maine.

Conscientious Maine breeders follow selective breeding programs, screen homes for well-socialized pups and work with new owners over the lifetime of the dog. Maine breeders and veterinarians work closely to health-screen dogs in advance of breeding. They are knowledgeable concerning the history and genetics of their dogs and follow a strict code of ethics. There is no tolerance for puppy mills or questionable breeding practices.

The solution to eliminating puppy mills in Maine is not to discourage the responsible breeders of purebred dogs. Ethical breeders are part of the solution to eliminating puppy mills. We should be valued for what we bring to the table. “Breed enthusiasts” (show breeders, purebred dog fanciers, hobbyists, responsible breeders) are motivated by love and respect for their breed, desire to contribute to the improvement of breed health and performance skills, enjoyment of breed competitions and sports, and pleasure of the company of dogs.
