Bill calling for biennial inspections rejected

AUGUSTA – It appears that a bill that would have doubled the time between required safety inspections for Maine cars and noncommercial trucks will not pass.

The House on Wednesday rejected the bill, which had already been weakened to limit the two-year inspections to new vehicles only. But lawmakers found out that even that change would jeopardize federal transportation funding to the state.

The Senate is expected to follow suit with the House and kill the bill.

Wednesday’s House action came nearly a week after the proposal won initial support.
