AUGUSTA – More of Maine’s convicted drunken drivers may be installing devices that measure the alcohol on their breath before they drive again.
The state Senate has given its final approval to legislation that encourages expanded use of ignition interlocks, which prevent a vehicle from starting unless the person provides a breath sample with an alcohol concentration below a set level.
The bill allows license reinstatement for a person with repeat drunken driving offenses if the driver installs and uses an interlock device for a required period of time.
It also increases license suspensions for drunken driving.
The Distilled Spirits Council is commending the Legislature for passing the bill.
