Skeffington, Mackey spark USM Huskies

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Eddie Skeffington and Josh Mackey hit solo home runs in the sixth inning as the University of Southern Maine of Gorham defeated the University of Chicago 2-0 in college baseball action Thursday.

Joe Curran, Mike Eaton and Andrew deBethune combined to allow just four singles and two walks through nine shutout innings for the Huskies.

Mike Serio singled twice for the Maroons.

Colby sweeps MIT

At Chandler, Ariz., Colby College of Waterville scored four runs in the first inning and held on to beat MIT 6-3 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Colby also won the nightcap 10-6.

In the first game, Sam Kennedy-Smith earned the win for the Mules and Bobby Whelan picked up his first save of the day.

In the second game, Spencer Jacobson had two hits for Colby and Craig Cooper and Nick Spillane each drove in two runs.

Southern Maine sweeps

At Mesa, Ariz., junior Anthony D’Alfonso homered and singled while driving in three runs as the University of Southern Maine shut down Gustavus Adolphus 9-1 in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader. The Huskies also won the second game 10-1.

In the first game, senior right-hander Adam Ross allowed just three hits and retired 12 straight after the first inning for Southern Maine. Collin Henry tripled and knocked in a run.

Cody Sakalski doubled to lead Gustavus Adolphus.

In the second game, Mark Schmidt had a no-hitter into the fifth inning for the Huskies. He allowed two hits and struck out three. D’Alfonso hit his fourth home run of the season and added two singles and two RBIs. Eddie Skeffington tripled and drove in two runs.

Tory Herman drove in the lone run for Gustavus Adolphus.

At Chandler, Ariz., Wednesday, Kyle McKay hit a double and two singles to help lead Colby College to victory over Lawrence University.

John Lerner tripled and singled for Colby. Colin Riggs doubled and singled and Ryan Conlon singled twice. Craig Cooper had two RBIs.

Softball

Harvard sweeps Maine

At Cambridge, Mass., Ellen Macadam hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Harvard University the lead and eventual 4-3 win over the University of Maine in the first game of a doubleheader.

Harvard also took the second game 11-6.

In the first game, Hayley Bock doubled and singled with an RBI for the Crimson. Emily Henderson and Jessica Pledger both had two singles.

Terren Hall doubled and knocked in two runs for the Black Bears.

In the second game, Bock homered and scored three runs for Harvard and Jennifer Francis added a double and two singles with two RBIs. Macadam also added two RBIs.

Erin Iandoli led Maine with a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Alexis Souhlaris homered, singled and scored two runs.

Colby gains split

At Fort Myers, Fla., Amanda Roehn spun a two-hit shutout as Colby College won the first game of a doubleheader over Middlebury 7-0.

Middlebury took the second game 10-9 in eight innings.

In the opener, Roehn, who struck out seven, singled and tripled while Alex Essman knocked a three-run triple for the White Mules.

In the nightcap, Colby rallied from a 7-1 deficit after the second inning but Middlebury eventually prevailed.

Mollie Puskar had a pair of hits and three RBIs and Gabi Kelly and Essman two hits apiece for the Mules.
